Columbo: A loud grenade explosion inside Sri Lanka's zoo, Columbo, on Sunday injured eight people prompting authourities to close it down, reported a police official.

"There has been an explosion. I heard a loud noise inside the zoo," an official said from the zoo in the Dehiwala suburb of Colombo.

The explosion caused panic among hundreds of visitors.

It is not yet known what caused the explosion but Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels are often to blame for suicide and bomb attacks in the capital and elsewhere.

The incident came one day after 20 civilians were killed by a parcel bomb inside a bus in Dambulla, north of the capital.

Security has been tightened as the country prepares to celebrate it's 60th anniversary of independence from the British on February 4.
