Karachi: Authorities on Sunday suspended two police officials after a suspected thief died in custody, allegedly after he was tortured by the police. The suspect, Khalid, was in custody at the Mango Pir police station and died on Saturday night.
Relatives and friends of Khalid staged a protest against the custodial death saying the suspect died due to police torture.. The local police is notorious for using ‘third degree’ methods on suspects to get a confession.
The protesters burnt tyres and heap of trash in front of the police station, while carrying sticks in their hands. They were demanding the arrest of the police officials who were responsible for Khalid’s death.
Sources said that the regional police chief Javed Odho suspended the officer-in-charge of the police station and demoted him from his present position. A case has been registered against two other officials.
Meanwhile in Mango Pir, an unknown extortionist attacked a contractor by planting a bomb in his car when he arrived at a hospital with his nephew and guards.
Police sources said that Mohammad Deen Afridi got off his car at the hospital in Ittehad Town when a bomb, planted in a motorcycle parked near the hospital, was detonated with the help of a remote control.
Police said Afridi was unhurt, but four men including his nephew and guards were injured. The bomb also blew off the pole mounted electric transformer and a taxi parked near Afridi’s car. The pharmacy of the hospital was also destroyed in the blast. Police said Afridi was getting extortion demands from the Taliban.
