KARACHI: Provincial police chief on Saturday suspended two police officials for their laxity as they transported two high-profile accused of murders and extortions in an autorickshaw to present them before an antiterrorism court (ATC) judge seeking their remand.

Gulam Haider Jamali, the inspector general of Sindh police issued the suspension orders of inspector Saleem Naz, who was posted at the Iqbal Market Polce Station and inspector Gulam Jabbar of the Orangi Town Police Station after the national media broadcast the news.

The two police officials were punished for bringing the two suspects into the rickshaw instead of the proper police van, a police spokesman said.

Tassaduq was booked for extortion whereas Tayyab was accused of murders and both of them belonged to a banned outfit. In the specially-set up ATCs, the cases of heinous crimes are referred to be tried. Bringing such wanted criminals in a rickshaw was a serious lapse of the security code, a senior police official said.

Several suspects have fled from the custody of police earlier. Most of the fleeing cases occurred when the accused were brought to or were leaving from court.

The police chief and senior officers complain lack of resources as one of the reasons behind inefficiency of the law enforcement agency.

However, the provincial Sindh government has cut its development budget by billions of rupees to divert the money to the police department for procurement of vehicles, arms and other safety equipment.

Meanwhile, two unidentified bullet-ridden bodies were found dumped near a shrine in Purana Golimar area.

Late on Friday night police gunned down four suspected gangsters of Lyari, a spokesman said. The first encounter took place under the Kharadar police station where two gangsters of Baba Ladla gang were killed, the police said.

The second shoot-out took place at Chakiwara where two alleged criminals of Uzair Baluch gang were killed. Baluch, the kingpin of the main Lyari gang, was arrested by the Interpol in late December last year while he was trying to go to the Gulf under an Iranian passport and fake identification.
