Karachi: The provincial Sindh government yesterday formed a five-member joint investigation team (JIT) to interrogate the suspect in the murder of Imran Farooq, the founding leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) who was stabbed to death in London in 2010.

The home department has notified the setting up of the JIT that comprises senior officials of the civilian and military investigation and intelligence organisations. The team has been mandated to complete their probe within seven days.

They have been asked to submit the report within two days of the completion of the investigation, a government letter says.

Murdered outside home

Farooq, the senior MQM leader, who was living in self-exile in London since 1992 along with MQM chief Altaf Hussain, was murdered outside his home in 2010. The assailants stabbed him several times from behind. However, the culprits remained untraced ever since, despite London Metropolitan Police trying to solve the case. Media reported that two of the key suspects were held in Pakistan and they were under the custody for the security agencies for quite long.

The government kept denying detaining any person in the Farooq murder case.

However, on Monday, federal interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan disclosed that the security agencies had arrested a key suspect of the Farooq murder and his arrest would reveal missing links in the case.

On Tuesday, paramilitary Rangers produced Moazzam Ali Khan, the arrested man, in an anti-terrorism court seeking his custody for 90 days.
