Peshawar: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday promised infrastructure and developmental projects in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing a workers’ convention in Peshawar, he said: “You want to see a new Pakistan, we want to see a new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”

He said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was given a chance of making new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) but the leadership did not come true on its promises made to the people of the province after being in power for two years.

He said the federal government has also planned construction of new universities in KP.

Prime Minister said that the government is taking all steps to overcome the energy shortfall in the country.

“The day is not far when the nation will hear good news in this regard,” the premier said.

He said the economy is heavily dependent on energy and overcoming this challenge will lead to improvement in the industrial and agricultural sectors.

“This would also allow the government to increase spending on the social sector to facilitate the common man,” Nawaz said.

Earlier addressing PML-N parliamentarians, Prime Minister MNawaz Sharif said Operation Zarb-i-Azb had broken the backbone of terrorists and that targeted operations in Karachi were also yielding positive results.

“We are eliminating terrorists and criminals with full force and will not rest till the elimination of the last terrorist,” he said.

“No armed militia would be allowed to operate in the country,” he added.

Speaking about the operation in Karachi, the premier said that it is not directed against “any specific group or party, but against target killers and criminal elements.”

Sharif said economic development in the country will create employment opportunities for people and play a crucial role in eliminating terrorism.

He said because of ‘effective’ economic policies of the government, tangible results are being achieved and being recognised by the international media.

Sharif announced the Afghan government is cooperating with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, saying the government will redirect its attention to other matters once terrorism is eliminated.

The prime minister said the national economy is being revived and international organisations including Moody’s, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Bloomberg have appreciated the economic achievements of the government.

Sharif assured commitment to resolving the power crisis and said the government is set to achieve its targets in this regard. “We will ensure every house has electricity,” the premier promised.

He was optimistic that the government’s endeavours would enable the creation of more jobs.

He also advised the president of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter of PML-N to appoint upright candidates to contest the KP local government elections.
