Islamabad: During a meeting with a visiting top UK official, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said the Kashmir issue must be resolved according to the UN resolutions — as per the commitments made by India.

The United Kingdom’s national security adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant called on the prime minister.

Officials said the current high tensions between Pakistan and India came under discussion.

According to an official statement, the British adviser appreciated Sharif’s policy of reaching out to neighbouring countries to establish cordial relations.

It quoted Sir Grant as saying, “We encourage and support your efforts for peaceful cooperation with your neighbouring countries.”

He acknowledged the huge sacrifices made by the armed forces, police and other law enforcing agencies of Pakistan in the war against militants, the statement said.

The commitment of political government and armed forces, supported by the people of Pakistan have resulted in “phenomenal victory against terrorism,” the UK official said.

During the meeting Nawaz Sharif emphasised that the world community must take a note of the grave human rights violations and atrocities committed by Indian forces in India-administered Kashmir.

The prime minister said that Kashmir is the core issue between India and Pakistan and its resolution would ensure durable peace in the region.

It is high time the long-standing issue is resolved as per the aspirations of the people of Kashmir, as laid down in the UN resolutions on the issue, the prime minister said.
