Islamabad: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the most seats in the first local government elections in Islamabad, with the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) coming in a close second.
According to unofficial results available Tuesday the PML-N won 21 seats in the elections for union councils in the capital’s urban and rural areas held on Monday.
The PTI led by Imran Khan secured 16 seats, most of these from the urban areas, while independent candidates bagged 13 seats.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JUI) contested the polls but failed to make a mark.
At least nine candidates, belonging to the minorities, got elected unopposed in different union councils on the reserved seats.
Chief Election Commissioner, Justice (retd) Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan in a statement expressed satisfaction at peaceful conclusion of the electoral exercise.
He praised the army, Rangers and police for their role in the maintenance of peace and order during the polling process.
