Karachi: The water crisis in Karachi on Wednesday echoed in Islamabad as senators debated the issue at length.

Vast parts of the city remained without water following multiple bursts in the main water pipelines.

The financial capital of Pakistan has faced acute water shortage for some time but the crisis deepened on Tuesday night as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) warned that the crisis could lead to law and order problems because of prolonged water supply disruption.

The KWSB said that the 72-inch water conduits carrying water from Dhabeji, Gharo, Pipri, Hub and NEK pumps experienced power breakdown for four hours. The power failure caused a reverse pressure in the pipelines which the pipes could not sustain, leading to the bursts.

It would take 72 hours to restore the supply to the city.

Senator Nasreen Jalil of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) presented an adjournment motion in the Senate highlighting the crisis. She told the upper house of the parliament that a mega project K-4 was lying pending in the files for years.
