Sukkur: Thousands of supporters Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto greeted former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on Saturday as she visited her stronghold in southern Pakistan.

Wearing her trademark white scarf, Bhutto expressed her excitement over her first trip since an assassination attempt last week that killed at least 139 people.

"It's a long time since I've been here and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to put my feet on my homeland once again, to see the love of my people.," she said.

Bhutto added, "This has strengthened me to do what I can to save Pakistan by saving democracy, which is so essential to giving people safety, security and better prospects."

Bhutto arrived in a bullet-proof vehicle at her father's tomb in their ancestral village of Garhi Khuda Baksh, which was guarded by dozens of armed workers from her Pakistan People's Party.

Bhutto draped a shawl inscribed with Islamic verses and sprinkled rose petals on the grave of her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's first popularly elected prime minister.

She then sat by the tomb, reciting Koranic verses.

Red, green and black flags lined the roadside in the agricultural land around Larkana village, where farmers were busy harvesting their rice crops.
