Islamabad: A team from Britain’s Scotland Yard arrived in Islamabad on Saturday in connection with the investigation of the 2010 murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq in London.

The officials from the London Metropolitan Police team are expected to meet some suspects who are in custody of Pakistani authorities.

Earlier this week, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the British team would question the suspects.

In April this year, the interior minister had announced the arrest of Moazzam Ali from Karachi whom he had described as the primary suspect in Dr Farooq’s murder.

Last week two men identified as Mohsin Ali and Khalid Shamim wanted in the murder of Dr Farooq were said to have been taken into custody from near the Pak-Afghan border at Chaman in Balochistan province.

MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq, aged 50, was on his way home from work when he was murdered on September 16, 2010 outside his London home.

Ahead of the arrival of the Scotland team here, a BBC report quoting an unnamed authoritative Pakistani source said MQM had received funding from the Indian government.

The report added that UK authorities investigating MQM for alleged money laundering also found a list of weapons in a property associated with the party.

Islamabad has formally requested the UK government to assist its probe into the matter by providing access to all information they may have regarding the disclosures made in the BBC report.
