Islamabad: Police say two retired army officers were involved in April 22 robbery in which an amount of Pakistani Rupees 70 million (Dh2.5 million) was looted from a money changer at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

“A former colonel and a major were directly involved in the robbery,” Regional Police Officer (RPO) in Rawalpindi adjoining Islamabad told the media.

The retired officers will be arrested soon, RPO Muhammad Wisal Fakhr Sultan Raja said, without identifying the duo.

The police officer, who is leading the investigation in the sensational airport robbery, said the two retired army officers will be arrested soon.

The interior ministry has been requested to put the names of the two retired armymen on the government Exit Control List to ban their departure from the country, he said.

He said five people involved in the robbery have already been arrested and more than rupees 30 million of the looted money have been recovered.

During the airport heist two of the robbers were dressed in police uniforms and a third posed to be an official of an intelligence agency.

The robbers had kidnapped a money changer arriving at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport from Karachi with more than Rs70 million. They robbed him of the money and dumped him on a roadside.

The RPO said three of those arrested are natives of Gujranwala, while one member of the gang is in Dubai.

He said the suspect in Dubai will be brought back through Interpol.
