Islamabad: Heavy rains have battered vast swathes of the countryside in Pakistan's southern Sindh province this week, killing 52 people, according to reports Saturday.
The rains, which started on Wednesday, wiped out a large number of villages after canals breached their banks.
Thatched houses collapsed and thousands of people had to take refuge in relief camps.
Ten people died in Benazirabad, eight in Umerkot, five in Naushahro Feroze, four each in Dadu, Tando Allahyar and Mirpurkhas, three each in Shikarpur and Sanghar, two each in Khairpur and Tharparkar districts and one in Hyderabad city.
Crop damage
The widespread flooding damaged thousands of hectares of crops of paddy, cotton and vegetables, the reports said, adding that thousands of cattle also perished in the rains.
The National Disaster Management Authority said adequate measures were being taken to provide relief to the affected people, including distribution of tents and food packets. Local television channels however showed groups of displaced men, women and children complaining of lack of much-needed aid.
