Islamabad: A few hours ahead of the deadline imposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Monday submitted details of party accounts and foreign funding received in the last seven years.

Last week, the ECP had issued its final warning, setting the deadline for September 18.

The PTI counsel once again urged the five-member ECP bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza, not to give details of party accounts to the petitioner, Akbar S. Babar — a former PTI member.

Hearing this, the chief commissioner remarked that according to a Lahore High Court ruling, the details of assets should be published online. He directed the PTI counsel to get the financial documents verified through concerned officials, according to Dawn news.com.

Babar on Monday termed account details presented by PTI chief Imran Khan to ECP as fake and challenged the information revealed in these documents.

When the bench asked the counsel whether the financial records were the same as what the party had submitted in the Supreme Court, counsel Faisal Chauhdry said that there were additional documents as well.

Talking to media outside the ECP, Babar — who had filed the case on November 14, 2014, after he developed differences with Khan — said he had asked the ECP if it was the same documents presented to the Supreme Court, if so then “our opinion” may also be considered before issuing the decision.

“There is no bank statement. There is no money trail. If these are the same documents, then these are fake documents. There was no detail in documents presented to Supreme Court about transactions from London and Dubai made through “Hundi” for PTI,” he claimed.

Babar also named couple of people who have been sending money for Khan through illegal means while some donations coming from US in the name of Shaukat Khanam were also used for party expenses.

He alleged that nearly $3 million (Dh11 million) in illegal foreign funds were collected through two offshore companies, registered under Khan’s signature, and that money was sent through illegal ‘hundi’ channels from the Middle East to accounts of PTI employees. He also alleged that the foreign accounts used to collect funds were concealed from the annual audit reports submitted to the ECP.

“Out of 688 pages statement, 628 pages simply carry names of persons who donated money but without any bank statement or money trail,” he added.

Babar said he had already provided some proof to the ECP and would submit more to negate the claims of PTI regarding account statements. “I shall not let Imran Khan run away with illegal foreign funding. He had collected money through illegal means and would be exposed.”

He said Khan has a hypocritical approach as he expresses no confidence in the ECP but the same time he desires scrutiny of other parties’ accounts.

Mentioning the NA-120 election, he said khan had asked voters to vote for new Pakistan but voters opted for the old Pakistan because by having corrupt people in his party ranks one cannot create new Pakistan. “Voters have come to know that Imran Khan had failed to create new KPK [Khyber Pakhtunkhwa] and situation in the province had worsened during PTI’s tenure. Therefore, they rejected Imran Khan’s slogan.”

He said people have started losing confidence in Khan for his dual character and they don’t want to be cheated any more in the name of New Pakistan or corruption. “Everybody knows that Imran Khan stopped accountability process in KP. Therefore, people cannot rely on a person who backs out from his commitment.”

The bench subsequently adjourned the hearing until October 16.
