Islamabad: The person who shot and killed university student Mashal Khan during mob violence on the campus in northwest Pakistan on April 13 has not been arrested so far, the Supreme Court was informed here Thursday.

A three-judge bench headed by Pakistan’s Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had taken notice of the reported lynching of the student at the Wali Khan University in the city of Mardan in northwestern Khyber Pakthunkhuwa (KP) province.

During a hearing, the Additional Advocate General of KP Waqar Ahmad told the bench that the shooter in the Mashal murder case has been identified but remains at large.

He submitted a report according to which 36 accused, including nine university staffers, had been arrested in connection with the case and six have confessed to involvement in Mashal’s murder before a magistrate.

The lawyer told the bench that as per the court’s instructions, a Joint Investigation team including representatives from Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been set up to probe the lynching.

In his remarks, however, the chief justice reportedly said that the court is not supposed to conduct investigations, nor does it want to interfere in such matters. He instead directed the relevant authorities to conclude their investigations without delay.
