Karachi: Former speaker of Pakistan’s national assembly Fahmida Mirza on Tuesday revolted against the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to join her husband’s war against Asif Zardari, claiming that his life was in danger.

At a press conference, Mirza, who is currently a parliamentarian and party loyalist, blamed her government in the Sindh province of using the police against her husband Zulfiqar Mirza, a close friend of Zardari who has voiced differences against him lately.

Mirza’s press conference was held in Karachi as police surrounded the farm house of Mirza in Badin town 150 kilometres east of this port city, to arrest Zulfiqar Mirza.

Zulfiqar Mirza, a former PPP parliamentarian, had resigned from his seat after he developing political differences with Zardari.

However, in recent weeks he started giving television interviews accusing Zardari of corruption, murders and his being involved in moral vices for which Mirza claimed to be a witness.

Tension brewed in Badin amid the exchange of barbs between Zulfiqar Mirza and PPP leaders followed by the arrest of some activists supporting Mirza in Badin. Mirza later stormed the police station and assaulted the officers on duty.

A case was registered against Mirza under the anti terrorism section and arrest warrants issued. Mirza, however, got his protective bail issued from the court.

“The Sindh police has been highly politicised and they are being used by the government to harass my husband,” Fahmida told newsmen.

She demanded Islamabad to intervene in the matter and replace the current inspector general of police and the chief secretary of the province as well as the district police officer in Badin so the mater could be dealt with.

Party leaders were trying to pacify the matter that became a serious blow to the PPP.

Fahmida tacitly offered a truce to her party leadership saying that their passports were lying with the US consulate for the issuance of visas and she would leave the country for medical treatment as soon as they got the passports.
