Islamabad: A Pakistani who allegedly ripped off Rs two billion from people through a website has reportedly been nabbed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

More than 5,000 people were defrauded in the online scam, said a newspaper report Thursday, identifying the prime suspect as Liaquat Ali, a resident of Sialkot in Punjab province.

The report quoted senior FIA official Sajjad Bajwa as saying the accused along with a number of accomplices set up a website — e2click.com — through which they asked people to get registered with them against certain amount and earn profits (by posting and clicking advertisement).”

Bajwa said the owners of the website won confidence of their clients by giving away a few thousands rupees in profit.

The clique operated the website from June to November 2015, the official said.

“We have detected rupees 200 million in a couple of accounts of the prime suspect. We are conducting raids to arrest his accomplices and will recover the looted money,” the FIA official said.

The FIA acted after receiving dozens of complaints against the website owners. It has sent the laptops and mobile phones recovered from the suspect for forensic examination.
