Islamabad: The head of a little-known political group that earlier this month put up billboards in major Pakistani cities, calling on the army chief to take over control, was arrested on Wednesday, according to media reports.

Mian Kamran, chairman of the ‘Move on Pakistan’ party, was taken into custody in a predawn police raid on charges of vilifying armed forces and trying to foment disorder, a private television channel said.

The channel said Kamran was picked up from a ‘guesthouse’, or mini hotel, where he was staying in Islamabad.

A case had been registered against him at police stations in Lahore and Faisalabad cities in Punjab province and in Islamabad. A police detail from Lahore arrested him.

The banners, which bore pictures of army chief General Raheel Sharif, had drawn strong reaction from mainstream political parties of the country.

Some politicians termed it a conspiracy against the democratically elected government while others accused the ruling party of being behind the campaign.

The Inter-Services Public Relations, media wing of the military, said on July 12 that it has nothing to do with the banners and the group involved.
