Islamabad: Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali was sworn in as new chief justice of Pakistan here on Thursday.

He replaces Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja who retired on Wednesday upon attaining superannuation, after holding the top judicial post for 24 days.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath to him at a solemn ceremony.

Justice Jamali was born on December 31, 1951, in the southern Pakistani city of Hyderabad, His parents had migrated to Pakistan from Jaipur, India, in 1947.

He obtained a Bachelors’ Degrees in Commerce and Law from the University of Sindh in 1971 and 1973 respectively. Justice Jamali was appointed judge of the Sindh High Court in May 1998.

He was among those judges who refused to take a fresh oath under the Provisional Constitution Order in 2007 issued by then military ruler Pervez Musharraf. He was reappointed judge and chief justice of the High Court of Sindh on August 27, 2008, and promoted to judge of the Supreme Court in August 2009.
