Islamabad: The government has responded to Supreme Court criticism that antiterrorism National Action Plan (NAP) launched early this year has not achieved the desired results over the past six months.

In a statement the interior ministry has pointed out that international think tanks have included Pakistan in the list of countries where acts of terrorism have declined.

The ministry’s response followed observations by the Supreme Court terming the NAP an eyewash.

According to Interior Ministry Chaudhry Nisaqr Ali Khan a detailed report on the execution of NAP would be presented to the apex court in the days ahead.

The ministry’s statement indicated some 54,376 combing operations have been undertaken so far, resulting in 60,420 arrests.

Under NAP, 3,019 intelligence-based operations were carried out while 1,388 pieces of intelligence were shared.

Some 97.9 million mobile sim cards have been verified using biometric technology while 5.1 million sim cards have been blocked, according to the statement.

Some 1,776 cases have been registered and 1,799 arrests have been made so far in the process to prevent the promotion of hateful and provocative material, the ministry says.

Due to the launch of Karachi Operation, terrorism has decreased in the largest city and financial hub of the country and the law and order situation has improved, it claims.

During to the operation, target killing in Karachi has decreased 44 per cent, incidents of murder declined by 37 per cent, terrorism by 46 per cent and theft by 23 per cent. Furthermore, some 55,962 criminals have been arrested out of whom 688 were suspected terrorists, the ministry statement says.
