ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan National Assembly was informed on Wednesday that provincial governments have raised Counter Terrorism Departments (CTDs) in their police departments.

Parliamentary secretary for interior ministry told the house during Question Hour that Punjab has increased the departments from 1,182 to 1,500, Sindh from 728 to 1,000, the federal capital from 500 to 1,000 while Pakistan-administered Kashmir from 260 to 500. The number of CTDs in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa however, remained the same at 1,000 and 2,200 respectively.

He said the personnel from the new CTs are being imparted specialised training in the elite training centres equipped with specialised modules and specialised training courses.

International partners have also imparted anti-terrorist training programme to enhance tactical and operational capacity as per international standards, he added.

The European Union is extending financial assistance to support Pakistan’s Action to Counter Terrorism (Pact), a 2016-19 programme, to enhance capacity of prosecution, police and judiciary departments, the parliamentary secretary said.

Replying to a query, he said Pakistan-Afghan border was reopened on March, 21 for all types of traffic, under the prime minister’s order.
