Karachi: At least five people including a police officer were gunned down on Monday as lawyers marched to call for more security and compensation for their murdered colleague’s family.
The killings were committed in different parts of the city within an hour.
Imran Yousuf, a trader at Bantwa Gali, the busy and bustling old city area, was in his car along with his security guard when the attackers, riding on a motorcycle, opened fire on him. The security guard was injured with the gun shots.
In the Sherpao area of Landhi town, a number of men gunned down Zulfiqar Ali, an assistant sub-inspector of the police.
Two bodies in sacks were also found at the roadside near rubbish at Abbas Town, along Abul Isphani Road. The hands and feet of both the bodies had been tied. Police said they were kidnapped and killed after they were tortured.
In the Bin Qasim area another man, Hazrat Umar, was gunned down.
Meanwhile, lawyers rallied on the roads and had scuffles with the police while trying to get to the Chief Minister House to register their protest and stage a sit-in. However, the protest rally was held to demand the arrest of the murders of M. M. Tareq, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and right activist who was gunned down last week. The lawyers during their sit-in at the CM house demanded Rs5 million compensation for the family of Tareq and demanded weapon licences for the lawyers so that they could buy and keep arms for security.
The administration blocked the road with shipping containers to prevent the lawyers approaching the CM House.
High Court Bar Association president Gulam Mustafa Lakhani said the lawyers would hold a longer march on February 27 by rallying from the High Court to the mausoleum of Quide Azam, the founding father of the nation.
Although, many of the murderers were still at large, the police claimed to have arrested a notorious killer who had murdered a police officer in Khairpur district in northern Sindh. The police spokesman said Rahno Shaikh was wanted for the killings of several police officials.
