KARACHI: The city administration deployed extra force in the affected areas to preserve law and order situation after at least 10 men were gunned down in recent violent incidents erupted late last night and continued this morning.
The city police chief Iqbal Mahmood said that more contingent of police would be deployed in the city till Saturday evening to control the law and order situation.
The provincial police chief Fayyaz Leghari also ordered an immediate inquiry into the killing spree on the streets that took lives of at least 10 people since late Friday midnight.
Late last night unknown gunmen riding on motorcycles opened fire on the people sitting outside in Sector 5-C of North Karachi killing at least three men.
Soon after the incident another batch of unknown bike riders fired at a roadside restaurant in Sector 10-C, known as Anda Mor and killed at least five men. Several others were injured. Earlier two men were shot dead at Water Pump by some unknown men. The ruthless killings led people of the area in agitation who blocked the main Pakistan Avenue, a thoroughfare that connects the city with its national highway.
The angry protesters pelted stones on the passing vehicles.
In yet another incident a man killed a woman riding on a public bus in Kharadar district.
A Human Rights Commission of Pakistan report earlier said that till June some 740 people were killed in the target killings on the basis of ethnicity, sects, or political affiliations.
In the previous year the total death toll of such killings reached 1750.
Karachi has been the largest city of Pakistan having a population of more than 18 million heterogeneous people and is financial capital of the country contributing more than 40 per cent to the national exchequer.
