Patna: A youth in Bihar on Friday brutally killed a schoolgirl by slitting open her throat with a knife in what police believe as a typical case of “unrequited love”. The girl was studying in Grade 10.

The horrible incident took place at Pithauri village in Gopalganj district, some 170km north of Patna, on Friday morning.

According to police, the girl, Rekha Kumari, accompanied by her classmates was on way to attend a coaching class when the accused stopped her midway. The girls accompanying the victim tried to rescue her from his clutches and raised an alarm, but the accused chased them away by firing shots in the air.

As her friends rushed back to village for help, the accused caught the girl and slit open her throat with a knife, leading to her instantaneous death. By the time the villagers could rush to the spot for help, she lay dead in a pool of blood. The villagers found her lifeless body lying in a roadside bush with her books strewn around.

According to reports, the accused, after committing the crime, also slit open his throat with the same knife in a bid to end his life. He was still bleeding when the villagers arrived on the spot. Later, they admitted him to a local hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

“This appears to be a case of unrequited love. We have registered a case in this regard and are investigating the matter,” the Gopalganj district superintendent of police Ravi Ranjan Kumar told the media Friday.
