New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sakshi Maharaj landed in fresh controversy on Friday after a video went viral on social media in which a young woman was allegedly asked to unbutton her jeans in front of him.

In the video, whose authenticity cannot be verified, BJP’s Member of Parliament (MP) from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, Sakshi is shown sitting on a chair, discussing something with a group of people, while a young woman is asked to unbutton her jeans in front of him and show wounds that she suffered in her abdomen.

Sakshi was reportedly at a BJP worker’s house in his constituency after a police raid, where some of the family members including the girl allegedly got injured. While the visuals created outrage on social media, Sakshi termed the allegation “baseless.”

He blamed the controversy on journalists who were filming the incident.

“I asked the girl to stop and said there was no need for her to show her wounds. However, the reporters there insisted she reveal her wounds. I was shocked and the moment that happened, I stood up and went away as the girl is like my daughter. You can see the video for yourself and check,” Sakshi told reporters on Friday.

“On May 3, I had gone to the house of a BJP worker. The house had been raided by the police on April 30 on suspicion that spurious liquor trade was on there. The police entered the house without warrant. They misbehaved with the women and molested them,” Sakshi said explaining the sequence of events.

Meanwhile, in another development, the controversial leader has been booked for threatening to shoot the police, while he was addressing a rally in the Fardpur area of Mainpuri on Tuesday. He was charged for saying that the police would have to face bullets, if they conducted any more raids at the said BJP worker’s house.

The religious leader has more often than not courted attention with his controversial comments on various issues.

Recently, he urged Hindu women to produce at least four children to “protect” the Hindu religion. On September 14, 2015, in a speech in Kannauj, Sakshi said the ‘madrasas’ (Islamic seminaries) were creating terrorists.

Following the 2015 Nepal earthquake that killed thousands and left millions homeless, Sakshi had claimed that the earthquake happened because Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the Kedarnath temple. He claimed that Gandhi ate beef and visited the temple without purifying himself.
