Mumbai: A 26-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself whilst chatting with her partner on webcam at her residence in the western suburb of Juhu.

According to police, the victim, Shobhana Surati, who worked with a software company, was talking with her partner, Swapnil Surve, on the interneton Wednesday night at around 8 pm. Apparently, the conversation either took a serious turn or there was an argument between the two that made her take this extreme step.

The young woman hanged herself with her ‘dupatta’ from the ceiling fan.

Since she was alone at home, Surve tried to contact her sister and asked her to rush home but it was too late before anyone could arrive. Her sister said later that the victim kept calling him to her house but the man refused to come. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. A police official said that the victim’s parents were away in Surat, Gujarat, and have been informed of their daughter’s death.

As per reports, Shobana and Surve had secretly married in court but were living separately as the man’s parents had allegedly demanded a dowry of Rs2 million. They had sent her back refusing to accept their marriage.

Police have seized the laptop and webcam and are investigating it as a dowry case.

In another incident on the same day in the morning, Amita Dedhia, 34, former wife of a developer, committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of a 15-storey building in the western suburb of Malad. Amita was divorced from her husband, Ajay Dedhia, in 2006, and they have a daughter aged 10. Police are going through her phone records to investigate the motive behind her suicide.
