Hyderabad: Hyderabad has made a big leap towards attaining world class IT infrastructure and high speed internet connectivity, with the Telangana state government launching the “Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project” or Hy-Fi.

The project which started with 1,000 hot spots across the city will eventually see 3,000 hot spots installed.

City official B. Ramohan, who inaugurated the project, said, “Hy-Fi will make Hyderabad the truly connected city on the digital front”.

The project will enable people to get a high speed connectivity at their homes as well as at public places. With a speed of 5 Mbps to 10 Mbps the first half an hour use will be free.

Malls, tourist attractions, schools and colleges are among the first 1000 hot spots.

Principal Secretary IT Department Jayesh Ranjan said that the project will be a big boon to the businessmen, shop keepers, entrepreneurs, students and visitors as they will be able to get easy connectivity wherever they want.

The technical infrastructure for the project has been put together by the private sector telecommunication companies like Act Fibernet, Airtel and Indus Towers while the Cellular Operators Association of India is the technical adviser to the state government.

The full fledged project was launched following the success of the pilot project launched in 2015 at hundred hot spots. The number was gradually increased to 250.

Once the project was stabilised in Hyderabad, the state government will expand it to three other major cities of Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammmam.
