Patna: A villge court in Bihar ordered villagers to shoot dead a man who pursued a relationship with a local woman, in what is the latest incident of “honour killing”in the area.

The incident took place at Gaurachakki village in Bhagalpur district, some 250km east of Patna, on Monday night.

As per reports, 26-year-old Himanshu Yadav, a teacher, fell in love with a young woman, identified as Soni Kumari, and eloped with her.

The two later married in a local court.

The man had been teaching the girl at home when they fell in love.

Subsequently, the woman’s parents registered a case with the local police after which the police recovered the couple and handed them over to the respective parents.

On Monday night, a village court was organised over the issue and the respective family members were asked to come to the court to present their position.

Witnesses said after hearing both sides, the court ordered to shoot dead the accused boy for his “crime”.

Subsequently, the villagers took the accused in custody and assaulted him with iron rods, leaving their hands and feet with multiple fractures.

Even as the victim lay writhing in pain, the villagers shot the young man dead by pumping six bullets into different parts of his body. He died on the spot.

Reports said the vllagers also assaulted and shot the man’s old mother when she tried to save him. She received injuries in her arms and has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested two peopel and formed a special team to arrest absconding suspect.

“We have taken the matter seriously and have arrested two persons in this connection,” a local senior police offcial Manoj Kumar told the media on Tuesday.

Last year, a teenaged girl and her boyfriend were badly beaten up, murdered and burnt on the same pyre in Gaya district for daring to fall into love against the wishes of their parents.

A number of women had joined the frenzied mob, which assaulted the lovebirds to death, without any sense of remorse, witnesses said.
