Thiruvananthapuram: In a tragic incident, a doctor, who was travelling with her three young children, fell off the train even as the kids were fast asleep during their journey in the night.

It was only in the morning when they children awoke and started crying after realising their mother was missing that other passengers also came to know of the tragedy.

The deceased was identified as Dr Thushara, 38, a medical officer of the Kalleli Government Ayurveda Hospital near Konni, and a native of Pathanamthitta district.

The doctor and the children began their journey from Chengannur, along with a female help, by the Malabar Express on Tuesday at 9.30pm and are believed to have immediately gone to sleep.

They were headed to Kannur, where Thushara’s family lives. Her husband, Dr Anup Muralidharan, had seen her and the children off at the railway station.

It was only in the morning that her two children, who are school-going, found that their mother was missing, and began to cry. The third child is only two years old.

After taking the details of the family from the children, co-passengers contacted family members in Kannur and the railway police. A search by the railway police found Thushara’s body by the rail tracks near Thrissur.

The children and their help were handed over to relatives at Kannur. It is suspected that Thushara may have fallen off while going to the toilet in the night.

Dr Muralidharan is president of the Ayurveda Medical Officers’ Association of Pathanamthitta district.
