Patna: A Muslim woman in Bihar beat up her husband with a sandal, shortly after he handed her a divorce by uttering the word talaq three times.

The incident took place at a police station in Darbhanga district, more than 125km north of Patna, on Monday.

According to some interpretations of Sharia, a man can divorce his wife instantly by uttering the word ‘talaq’ three times in succession.

As per reports, Mohammad Mehfooj, a resident of Navtolia village, was angry because his wife didn’t bring enough dowry after their marriage ceremony.

In a fit of rage, he issued the “triple talaq” to his wife.

Subsequently, she reported the matter to the local Biraul police station after which the local police inspector Jitendra Narayan Singh called both sides to the police station.

Reports said the police tried to settle the issue but the man remained adamant about not keeping his wife, and again uttered ‘talaq’ loudly, which saw her patience finally running out.

Witnesses said upon hearing the ‘word’, the woman pounced upon her estranged husband right in the presence of officers, caught him by his sleeves and began raining sandal blows on him as he prayed for mercy.

Somehow, he freed himself of her clutches and fled the scene.

Last month, a man in a similar fashion had divorced his young wife after saying ‘talaq’ over the cell phone in Bhagalpur district, prompting the victim to make an emotional appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to end the practice.

The man refused to relent even after a local village council official intervened in the matter saying he had the right to divorce his wife under Sharia.

Earlier in November last, a woman had assaulted her husband when he divorced his wife on the streets after she objected to his illicit relations with another woman. The incident had taken place in Bhagalpur district.
