Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has urged the Central government to name the Hyderabad-based premier defence institution Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) after the late President APJ Abdul Kalam.

In a letter addressed to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rao said that in the work at the DRDO, Hyderabad was playing a crucial role in making India self-sufficient in the field of defence technology.

“Dr [Abdul] Kalam worked as a director of this prestigious organisation and many research projects were taken up under him”, Rao noted in his letter.

Kalam’s efforts were also behind the establishment of many defence research institutions such as Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Midhani, RCI and ICBM, he said.

Pointing out that Kalam had a special relationship with Hyderabad, Rao said naming DRDO after him would inspire the new generation and this will also be an appropriate tribute by the Indian defence establishment to him.

Former President and defence scientist Kalam passed away due to cardiac arrest on July 27.
