Hyderabad: Widespread rains continued for a second day over many parts of Telangana under the influence of low pressure over West Central Bay of Bengal today.

The Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad said that more rains were likely, especially in the northern parts of Telangana over the next three days.

Many parts of Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and most of north Telangana have been receiving copious amounts of rain since Thursday. Bomraspet in Mahabubnagar district and Pinapaka in Khammam district have recorded three-centimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Parts of Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, and the state capital, Hyderabad, have also received rain in the last two days.

In Hyderabad, traffic was thrown out of gear as the city and surrounding areas were lashed by heavy rains for the second consecutive day on Friday, and water clogged many important roads and junctions.

Water also entered houses in low-lying areas.

Rains also lashed Shamshabad, Adibatla and Ebrahimpatnam, and many other areas of the Ranga Reddy district.

The rains have brought some cheer to the people of Telangana who were facing water shortages as a result of scant monsoon precipitation. Himayat Sagar, Osman Sagar and Singur, all the major sources of drinking water in Hyderabad, had dried up. However, officials said that the present spell of rains came a too little and too late to fill these reservoirs. “Only heavy to very heavy rainfall over a long stretch of time can bring water in to these reservoirs”, a senior official of Hyderabad Water Supply Board said.

Meanwhile, the rains in neighbouring Chhattisgarh has brought some water to river Godavari in Khammam district. Officials on Friday opened 12 flood gates of Taliperu Project, discharging 16700 cusecs of water. However, any heavy inflows in Godavari in Khammam district benefit mostly the downstream areas of Andhra Pradesh or is wasted as it flows into the sea.
