Patna: Two teenaged lovers ended their lives by jumping in front of a running express train in Jharkhand after they failed to get their parents’ approval for marriage.

Police said the boy hailed from the Hindu community while the girl was a Muslim. Both were studying in Grade nine.

Reports said the teenaged lovers, both residents of Dalangi village in Giridih district, had wished to marry but their families were strongly opposed to the wedding. The girl’s parents fixed her marriage somewhere else and the wedding was to be solemnised soon, prompting the couple to commit suicide.

Witnesses said on early Saturday morning, they went near the Keshwari Bloc halt in the district, kissed each other and then jumped in front of the approaching Howrah-Jodhpur Express which was traveling in with full speed.   “The train ran over them, chopping them into pieces,” witnesses said.

Suicides over love affairs are becoming a matter of serious worry in the twin states of Bihar and Jharkhand. Last year in February in a similar case, two young lovers committed suicide in Dhanbad district by hanging from a ceiling fan in an abandoned government quarter during Valentine’s week.

In another such case, young lovers from Godda district committed suicide by consuming poison at a police station in Ranchi shortly after they were arrested by police. The incident took place on March 16. In Bihar too, two teenaged lovers committed suicide by jumping before a running train in July last year. Both hailed from Lakhisarai district.
