Thiruvananthapuram: Six doctors from different hospitals in Kerala, who are accused of delaying treatment to a seriously injured man and not admitting him to their hospitals for treatment, are facing prosecution for alleged negligence and other criminal charges related to the incident.

Murugan, a native of Tamil Nadu, who had been seriously injured in a road accident in August in the state’s southern district of Kollam, was taken to different hospitals in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. Shockingly, he was denied admission everywhere, and the delay in providing treatment to him allegedly led to his death.

Local media reports said that six doctors from four different hospitals are facing prosecution for the death of Murugan.

A special investigation team had been formed to probe the incident after the appalling attitude of hospital staff at different hospitals towards the injured man was highlighted in the media.

Police are understood to have sought expert legal advice on whether the doctors can be held responsible for non-wilful homicide. A medical board has also constituted for a final decision on the medical treatment protocol that ought to be followed.

The doctors are facing the key charge that treatment was denied to Murugan despite knowing that he had serious head injuries.

On the fateful day, different hospitals in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts where Murugan was taken to, had offered different excuses for not admitting him and providing him emergency treatment.

While at least one hospital denied him admission on the ground that there was no one to stay with him at the hospital to assist him, another hospital denied him admission and treatment as there was no ventilator in the hospital.
