Patna: A teenaged schoolgirl was killed after she was dragged by her scarf by motorcycle-borne stalkers for several metres and run over, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Karjaon village in Kaimur district of Bihar on Tuesday, sparking protests in the area.

Police said the victim, Sudha Kumari, a class 10 student, was going to sit for her half-yearly examination in a local government school when three youths riding a motorcycle pulled her by her dupatta (scarf).

The bikers dragged her for around 50 metres before returning to drive their bike over her, killing her on the spot. Witnesses said the schoolgirl was killed as she fell on the ground after the scarf got entangled around her neck.

In the end, the bikers too fell into a ditch after losing balance when one end of the scarf got entangled in the wheel. Eventually, they fled the scene leaving behind the bike when local villagers rushed to the spot hearing the cries of other girls accompanying the victim.

Angry villagers blocked the traffic in the area and also protested on the streets demanding arrest of the culprits.

The police have seized the bike and begun an investigation. “We have registered the complaint against some unidentified persons but hope to arrest the culprits soon,” said a local police official, Abhay Singh, entrusted with the investigation.
