New Delhi: Rajya Sabha members on Tuesday condemned the rape of a four-year-old girl in Delhi, demanding strict action from the government in the case.

In response, the government said the crime was condemnable and assured of strictest possible action.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien called the incident “shocking”.

Raising the issue as soon as the upper house met, DMK member Kanimozhi said the crime was not an isolated one.

“A four-year-old girl has been raped in Delhi. She is in hospital right now,” Kanimozhi said.

“This is not the only incident. We are not very sensitive towards child abuse and child rape. The government has to take it as a very very serious issue,” she said.

The DMK parliamentarian was supported by Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan, who sought a discussion on the issue.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi condemned the incident and assured of strictest possible action.

“We condemn the incident. We will take strictest action,” he said.

Kurien instructed the minister to inform the house about the action taken in the case.

The minor girl was kidnapped and raped by her 28-year-old neighbour in outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area on Sunday.
