Thiruvananthapuram: Student outfits of leading political parties marched to a school in Kerala’s Kollam district on Monday, following the death of a girl student who had jumped from the third floor of the institute’s building last week.

The protests, and the resulting chaos, led to police resorting to a cane charge and bursting tear gas shells in front of the Trinity Lyceum School in Kollam.

Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the Kerala Students’ Union, the Students’ Federation of India and the Yuva Morcha participated in the protest, demanding that the school authorities who are alleged to have caused the girl’s death be brought to book.

The deceased was identified as Gauri Megha, a Class 10 student of the school. Police had registered a case based on her father Prasanna Kumar’s complaint that she jumped from the third floor of the building after being scolded by some teachers.

The girl was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and passed away on Monday morning. She had suffered serious injuries to her head and backbone in the fall.

A case has been registered against two teachers of the school, who are both absconding.

Local media reported that the incident was triggered some days ago when the girl’s younger sister, who is a Class 8 student in the same school, was made to sit among boys by a teacher for talking in class. The parents are then believed to have sorted out matters after visiting school.

The protesters are demanding the arrest of the concerned teachers. Anticipating the wave of protests, the school management had declared a holiday for the institution on Monday.
