Hyderabad: Finally there is a glimmer of hope for Osmania Hospital, which operates out a building that’s more than a century old.

Breaking his silence on the Telangana government’s plans to demolish the magnificent structure, Hyderabad’s influential member of parliament and president of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi has come out with a resounding no.

Rejecting the plan to demolish the building, the lawmaker has asked the government to construct new hospital buildings on the several acres of open land available in the same premises.

“We are against the demolition of the building as it is a heritage building not only for Hyderabad but for the entire country,” he told a press conference in Hyderabad. He pointed out that the government was already working to restore the Qutub Shahi tombs in Hyderabad which date back more than 400 years. “Osmania hospital building can also be similarly restored,” he said.

Owaisi’s strong opposition to the demolition plans have brought cheer to Hyderabad residents and heritage activists who had been fighting a losing battle to save the building given the government’s rather insensitive stand.
