Kolkata: The murder of a 17-year-old boy at the birthday party of author Amit Chaudhuri’s daughter in Kolkata has police baffled.

According to senior police officials, the victim, Aabesh Dasgupta, was “stabbed repeatedly with a broken liquor bottle”, and due to massive blood loss, suffered multi-organ failure, leading to his death.

“The attack was most brutal and equivalent to multiple stabbing with several injuries to his chest and neck. What led to the murder of a 17 year old in such vicious manner is difficult to understand,” the officer added.

Eye-witness reports suggest that Chaudhuri’s daughter hosted a lunch for her friends on her birthday at a club in South Kolkata and post lunch the teenagers gathered at her home, where alcohol was served. Following a subsequent altercation, the incident happened.

Dasgupta, a student of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, was rushed to a nearby hospital by the Chaudhuris, and declared brought dead. He apparently had lost his father earlier this year and his mother lost fainted after hearing of his death.

Although the Chaudhuris could not be reached for comment, police have questioned the birthday girl and Chaudhuri’s wife over the event. A senior official of the homicide department also visited their home, the scene of crime and said to have detained one of the teenagers, who is the prime suspect.

“It is a story of modern-day crime where teenagers gather to celebrate a friend’s birthday and drink at this age. Over a fight a friend gets killed,” said a senior official of the homicide department.

Society members are also concerned as to how a responsible author can allow his teenage daughter to serve alcohol at home and most importantly did not supervise the gathering. “In our zeal to emulate the west and its open culture we have learnt and imbibed all that is wrong with them. What is the need to serve alcohol at a teenagers’ party is a difficult to understand,” said Abhijit De, a sociologist.
