Hyderabad: The heavy rains of last week might have wreaked havoc for the people in Hyderabad but on the positive side the rains in other parts of the state have brought heavy inflows into various irrigation projects increasing the level of water.

While in Hyderabad itself 106 of the 185 water reservoirs are filled to its capacity, the level in other reservoirs in the state, Singur, Musi and Jurala has also increased significantly. With the inflows of water further increasing the Srisailam reservoir was also likely to reach its maximum level within a week.

With rains in Karnataka, there was an outflow of 40000 cusecs from Narayanpur reservoir on River Krishna to the downstream Jurala reservoir.

With rains continuing in Telangana and adjoining districts of Andhra Pradesh Srisailam reservoir was receiving 92000 cusecs of water. Official said due to continuing rains in Kurnool district Srisailam was getting copious inflows.

Against the full capacity of 215.81 tmcft, Srisailam reservoir currently has 187.71 tmcft water, officials said.

The increasing levels in Srisailam on River Krishna is good news for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as both the states are heavily dependent on this shared reservoir for irrigation, power and drinking needs.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad where the situation is limping back to normality after the cloudburst on Monday left most of the city inundated, the administration is bracing for any signs of breaching of any lake.

While 106 lakes have received surplus water and the excess is being discharged in a controlled manner, another 55 lakes have reached 75 per cent of their threshold level.

Shekhar Reddy, superintendent engineer of GHMC said after several years such a large number of reservoirs has received surplus water.

As a precautionary measure the authorities have kept sandbags ready to strengthen the embankments of the lakes to prevent flooding of surrounding residential areas.

The water of Mir Alam reservoir had entered the Nehru zoological park forcing the authorities to close the Safari Park.
