Thiruvananthapuram: Outspoken politician and the MLA representing Poonjar constituency, P.C. George, has hit out at the Kerala Women’s Commission.

His remarks came after the commission decided to take legal action against him for allegedly making disparaging comments against a Malayalam film actress who was abducted and sexually abused earlier this year.

The Women’s Commission has formally registered a case against him and the commission president, M.C. Josephine, said the matter would be soon informed to the speaker of the state legislative assembly.

George has been facing flak ever since he began speaking in a tone that appeared to be supporting popular actor Dileep who is in prison for being allegedly involved in the sexual abuse of the actress, and also making comments that the assault on the actress cannot be compared with that inflicted on Nirbhaya, the girl who was raped in a bus in Delhi and later succumbed to injuries a few years ago.

In a statement on Monday, George said he was committed to the constitution of the country and that no one need to try and make him a woman hater.

“I am not going to be subject to the diktats or threats of some self-proclaimed queen or queens or kings. I hereby notify all who have misunderstood me that in this life I have no plans to live in fear of anyone except God,” George said in the statement.

To the women’s panel chief, the MLA said she ought to take up the causes of the ordinary women in society rather than “hold up the rights of film actresses and creamy-layer feminists”.

Regarding his statement that apparently criticised the abducted and abused actress, George said he had only asked how she could go back to the sets for shooting if she had been — as media reports said, and the police submitted in court — as brutally abused as Nirbhaya had been.

The MLA also said Kerala was the place which witnessed the most number of male abuse cases, and that when he pointed out such issues, some people were trying to paint him as a woman hater.
