Thiruvananthapuram: A girl from Kadammanitta in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district who had been undergoing treatment after she was doused with petrol and set afire by her jilted lover, died in Coimbatore on Saturday.

She had been under treatment at the Kottayam Medical College with 80 per cent burns. On Thursday, she was taken to another hospital in Coimbatore by an air ambulance in a unique case of a patient from Kottayam being shifted thus.

Police from Pathanamthitta have proceeded to Coimbatore to conduct the formalities before the body can be brought back to Kerala for the funeral.

The incident happened at dusk on July 14, when the man reached her house and asked her to come outside. When she did, he threw the can of petrol he was carrying on her, and set her afire. She was first rushed to the Pathanathitta district hospital and then moved her to the Kottayam Medical College.

The accused, identified as Thekkumparambil Sajili, 23, also suffered 65 per cent burns. When he was chased by local residents, he escaped and hid all night in a bush before the police could find him. He is also under treatment for burns.

The girl had been in love with the man, but her family members had advised her to keep off the affair since she was still a minor aged only 17 years.
