Alappuzha : Four workers of the Cherthala-based Travancore Cocotuft (P) Ltd spent 111-man days over a span of four months using 470,000 coir tufts between alternate wefts of coir yarn to make "the world's longest doormat". They are now eyeing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The coir mat measures 101.6 metres in length, 1.2 metres in width, is 30 milimetres thick and weighs 999 kilogrammes.

It costs about Rs400,000 (Dh32,000).

"They [Guinness World Records] have asked us for the basic information and we are in the process of preparing that and once they are convinced they will visit us to see the product, which is a doormat," said P. Mahadevan, CEO of the company here.

The idea, according to Mahadevan, was inspired by a project in Alappuzha, for the growth of the coir industry in the state.
