Thiruvananthapuram: Police in Kerala have registered cases against four members of the staff and a student of the Farook College in Kozhikode on Saturday in connection with the violence that occurred over Holi celebrations in the college recently.

Cases were registered against teachers identified as Sajeer, Yunus and Nishad, and a laboratory assistant identified as Ibrahim Kutty.

One student has also been booked over the same incident. The student faces the charge of jeopardising the life of a staff member by reckless driving of his vehicle.

The incidents were triggered when students brought colour powders and water guns to the college campus to celebrate Holi, but was denied permission by staff members.

Students alleged that some of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college held a meeting and later assaulted them.

Police arrived on the scene, but matters took a different turn when videos showing staff members beating up students started circulating on social media. The college management denied the allegations and said the students had no permission to celebrate any festival that day, adding that the students had assaulted staff members when they objected to the students spraying water colours on passers-by.
