Thiruvananthapuram: Two college boys in Kerala, who were returning home by car after winning the top prize in a management fest, were killed when their car crashed into a truck.

The deceased, both MBA students from Rajagiri College in Kochi, were identified as Christy Mathew Philip, 24, of Nedumkunnam in Kottayam district, and Bimal Sebastian, 21, a native of Kudallur.

Two of their college mates who were also in the car were injured and have been admitted to hospital. The incident happened on Thursday at Potta, near Chalakudy town, on the national highway. The final rites of Philip and Sebastian were held on Friday.

The students were returning victorious from Malappuram, where they had finished toppers in the management fest hosted by the Department of Commerce and Management of the Calicut University. One of the boys had alighted at Thrissur on the return journey and the mishap occurred about half an hour later.

The deceased boys’ college team had won the overall championship at the management fest, and Sebastian had won a cash prize of Rs20,020 (Dh1,134) after being judged the best manager at the fest.

Their photos, showing the boys holding aloft the winners’ trophy, had been widely shared among college mates on social media, and even minutes before the accident they had sent more pictures to friends, one of them showing the team members in the car.

Earlier this month, two girls from Amal Jyothi College of Engineering in Kanjirappally, Kottayam district, Irene George and Merin Sebastian, had lost their lives when their college bus skidded off the road near Chikmagalur in neighbouring Karnataka state. The students had been on an industrial visit when the mishap occurred.
