Patna: Maoist terrorists have pronounced a “death sentence” on a senior judge from Bihar who awarded capital punishment to five Maoist rebels on Thursday after finding them guilty of killing two security personnel.

The rebels passed a “death sentence” on the Munger district judge Jyoti Swarup Shrivastava at its ‘people’s court’ held on Friday, according to a press statement issued to the local media by a Maoist spokesperson Laljit Koda. Taking the matter seriously, the police have beefed up security for the judge.

The Maoists have also given a call for two-day shutdown in Bihar beginning May 28 to protest the death sentence on their five colleagues. The shutdown came into force from the midnight yesterday itself. In view of the announcement, the police have been placed on high alert in the state.

The Maoist rebels — Vipin Mandal, Adhiklal Pandit, Ratu Koda, Bano Koda and Mannu Koda — were found guilty of killing security personnel during the last Lok Sabha elections.

According to reports, a group of security personnel from the elite Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were out patrolling on polling day when the rebels ambushed their vehicle and fired indiscriminately on them, killing two and wounding 10 others.

The incident had taken place near Sava Lakh Babasthan on the Gangata-Laxamipur road in the Munger district on April 10, 2014 during the first phase of polling.

The court’s judgement comes barely a month after a large number of Maoist rebels attacked another group of CRPF personnel in Sukma district from central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, killing at least 25 soldiers.
