Patna: A young man from Bihar who was accused of raping a woman from the Philippines has been released from jail with the promise that he will marry the victim.

Gyan Prakash, who runs a petrol pump business in East Champaran district of Bihar, was released from jail on Monday following an emotional appeal made by the victim to release him. The accused was lodged in the Gaya central jail since January this year.

In her petition filed to the local Gaya district court, the victim Shilah Ikoben had requested the court to consider her appeal to release the man on the plea that she wants to marry him.

“But that (marriage) is never possible until he is released from jail,” she had appealed. She had also appealed to the police to lift the case of rape registered with Bodh Gaya police station.

Reports said the victim sought his release from jail following his assurance that he will marry the woman after his release. The wedding is to be carried out soon before the visa period of the victim expires.

The victim is currently working on a American government project in Afghanistan and had become a friend with the accused during the course of chatting on Facebook.

Earlier this year, the Filipino woman had accused the man of inviting her to Bihar and then raping her at a hotel in the city of Bodh Gaya. According to her, soon after she reached Patna on December 29, the accused had brought her to Bodh Gaya on a private taxi.
