Mumbai: Mumbai police have beefed up security for Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan, following a threatening email sent to him allegedly from an ID belonging to terrorist outfit Daesh.

Sources said police received an application from the RBI three weeks ago, seeking an inquiry into the email received by its governor.

“The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai police is investigating the case. We are confident of tracing the origin of the email. We intensified security at all RBI events including press conferences where the governor will be present,” a senior police official said.

The sources said in the email, sent to Rajan’s official account, the sender threatened to eliminate the governor.

The sender said that he had been paid money to carry out his threat, but if the RBI governor paid more money, he could reconsider the threat. The sender, however, did not specify the amount of money.

The preliminary investigations have revealed that the email ID was accessed from various countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Italy, Nigeria, Germany, Ukraine and Hong Kong.
