Patna: Police in Bihar have registered a case against a hospital staff member after he allegedly made an attempt to rape a patient admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The victim was suffering from meningitis.

The incident took place over the weekend at a private hospital located in Purnia, an eastern Bihar town located some 360km from Patna.

According to the complaint registered with the police, the victim Nutan Devi, 45, was alone in the ICU when a staffer came close to her and allegedly tried to rape her. The accused fled the scene after her son-in-law reached the scene on hearing her alarm.

“She is disturbed and shaken after the incident. We ultimately had to take her out of the hospital and shift her to another one for treatment,” the victim’s son-in-law Manoj Kumar Chaudhary told the media on Monday.

Police said they have taken the matter very seriously since this concerns the safety of the patient and are investigating the case. “We are investigating the case and stern action will be taken against the culprits if the charges are proved,” a local police official Santosh Kumar Nirala said today. Police said they are scanning the CCTV footages to get to the bottom of the story.

This is the third such incident in Bihar this year. Earlier in January this year, a middle-aged woman was allegedly raped by a hospital staff in the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The woman had come to treat the fractured leg of her son when she had her modesty robbed.

The same month again, another rape bid was made in the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) when the patient had gone to the toilet. The miscreant fled the scene after she raised an alarm. The victim had come to the hospital to attend her ailing mother admitted to the gynaecology ward.
