Patna: A senior doctor from a premier health institute in Bihar has been charged with assaulting a woman with a slipper in the hospital after she pressed for conducting an operation on her husband suffering from prostate problem. The incident took place at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Tuesday.
According to reports, Kedar Rawat, a resident of east Champaran district in Bihar, was recently admitted to the PMCH after being afflicted with severe prostate trouble which doctors said had got enlarged.
Finding his case serious, the doctors asked the patient’s wife Lakshminia Devi to immediately arrange for two bottles of blood as the patient needed an operation done.
Subsequently, the woman made the rounds of all blood banks in the areas but failed to get one despite all efforts.
“When I entered the doctor’s chamber to intimate him of my problem and ask him to arrange it at his own end, the doctor suddenly got angry and began assaulting me with his slipper,” the victim alleged.
As per reports, several patients and attendants were witness to this incident. The woman is said to have cried bitterly during the assault.
The health department has ordered an inquiry into the incident. “We have come to know about the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The action will be taken against the doctor if he is found guilty during the probe,” hospital superintendent Dr Deepak Tandon told the media.
Last week, junior doctors at this hospital had proceeded on indefinite strike after being assaulted by attendants of a patient who died during the course of treatment. The two-day strike claimed lives of 16 patients admitted at the emergency ward for want of treatment.
The striking doctors returned to duty after the state government promised adequate security to them.
