Patna: A bride in Bihar delivered a baby minutes after reaching her new in-laws’ home, prompting the groom’s family to send her back to her parents.

The incident took place in Nalanda district, some 80km south of Patna, on Tuesday.

The marriage of Munna Das, a resident of Khirauna-Dighi village, was solemnised with a local girl from neighbouring Barandi village on Monday night amid much fanfare.

Reports said soon after the bride reached her in-laws’ home after marriage, she complained of pain in the abdomen and delivered a baby girl. The groom’s family said they did not notice the girl was pregnant as she was in bridal attire.

Although the baby died soon after, the incident has brought tension in the relations between the two families. The groom’s family hurriedly called the girl’s family and sent her back, accusing them of betrayal.

Reports said the bride confessed her deception and promised to be “loyal” to her husband but the in-laws refused to accept her.

“I know I have committed the mistake. My family committed a fault by keeping you in the dark but now that the marriage has taken place, I will stay only with my husband,” witnesses quoted the bride as having told her in-laws, who ignored her appeal.

The bride’s family later approached local police who refused to intervene in the matter. Instead, officers advised them to sort the issue out by themselves.

The girl allegedly was in a relationship with a man, who refused to marry her after she fell pregnant.
